Deborah Lessen
Deborah Lessen, NCPT is an acknowledged leader in the Pilates field and a former professional dancer and teacher. She was trained in the Pilates method by Joseph Pilates’ first protege, Carola Trier, with whom she studied and worked from 1980 to 1984. Her work has also been shaped by the influences of Martha Graham and Michele Larsson (Eve Gentry lineage).
In 1983, Ms. Lessen founded the Greene Street Studio in New York City, which for over four decades served a broad client base focused on general conditioning, performance specific training, injury prevention and post-rehabilitation. She also offered on-site comprehensive teacher training from 1994 to 2004. The studio closed in 2024, however mentoring and private sessions are available by appointment on a limited basis.
As co-defendant in the landmark federal trademark infringement case for the use of the name “Pilates,” Ms. Lessen rallied the Pilates community to oppose the action. The sweeping victory in November 1999 established “Pilates” as a generic term and directly led to the formation of the Pilates Method Alliance.
Ms. Lessen is a founding member and Past President of the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA), serving on the Board of Directors from its inception through 2010. She was instrumental in the creation of the PMA Pilates Certification Exam - now the National Pilates Certification Program (NCPT) and its NCCA accreditation. She served as Founding Chair of the PMA Certification Commission and was both editor-in-chief and a contributor to the original PMA Pilates Certification Exam Study Guide.
Ms. Lessen is an international presenter, conducting continuing education workshops and seminars for Pilates teachers. Her dedication to the advancement of Pilates is reflected in her commitment to education, community building and professional standards. Her innovative approach has influenced countless instructors and practitioners, ensuring that the Pilates method continues to evolve while maintaining its core principles.
